Misha is a high risk surgery because he has a grade 3 out of 6 heart murmur and abnormal ProBNP. Heart murmurs in cats can be harmless, meaning nothing is wrong with their heart. However, it could also indicate underlying heart issues causing their heart to not function properly. The only way to find out the exact cause of the murmur is with an echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart). These exams are performed at a full service or speciality clinic. The proBNP blood test came out as abnormal, meaning there is a higher likelihood that the murmur is being caused by underlying heart disease.
Animals with heart conditions can have bad side effects from the anesthesia which can lead to heart failure and in the worst case, death. We can still perform the surgery today but it’s important to note there will be an increased anesthetic risk.
