BCSAVE Owner Surrender Questionnaire

$$TITLE$$

For various legal reasons, it is BCSAVE policy to not take in stray dogs and only accept intake directly from Animal Control, shelters, transfers from other rescues, and owner surrenders.

The reasons for this are:

  • Owners who loose their dogs will typically reach out to local shelters, more so than every other method. Taking a stray dog to a local shelter gives it the best chance of being reunited with its owner. Unless a stray has been in the same area for several weeks and at least some due diligence has been made to find his owner (including things like scanning for a microchip, posting to local sheters, posting to social groups, etc.), it is our opinion that trying to reunite the dog with its owner should be priority. Taking a dog to a shelter (public or private) gives them the best chance for that to happen.
  • Taking in strays prevents BCSAVE from having any sort of clear ownership of a dog and can create very messy (both legal and emotional) situations if anyone sees that dog on our social sites and tries to claim them and theirs. By pulling a dog from a shelter first, it gives BCSAVE a sort of "clear title" to that dog. Without either a government agency, a local private shelter or group, or a clear owner who can surrender the dog to us, we just cannot take the chance.
  • Two of the most common issues finders have is that the local shelters are full and will not take the stray in and that the local shelter is a "kill shelter" and they are afraid of the dog being put down. If you are able to foster the dog, ask the shelter if they have any sort of "finder foster" program. Those programs allow a dog to be surrendered to a shelter where it can go through the stray-hold, while remaining with the foster and not taking up shelter space.

If you believe there may be good reason for us to consider this dog as an exception to policy, continue filling out the application.

If you do take the dog somewhere, please send us the shelter/group name, shelter/group location, and any intake information (such as name and/or ID # they assign the dog) you can get. That way, we able to follow the dog and, once any sort of stray-hold is up, we can see if our rescue is able to better help and we can get more exposure for this dog with other rescues and Border Collie groups.

Explain the situation and tell us why the current dog's owner is not able to fill out themself.
If you are with a Rescue Network or Partner working to get a dog out of a shelter, tell us who you are with, the shelter that has the dog, and brief explanation of the situation.
