Position Summary
The Humane Society & SPCA of Hancock County Animal Control is seeking to fill the role of Animal Control Dispatcher to support our Animal Control team. This key position handles incoming calls, dispatches officers, processes service requests, and helps ensure smooth daily operation of our facility. The ideal candidate is organized, calm under pressure, and passionate about animal welfare.
Physical & Animal Handling Requirements
This role requires more than sitting at a desk. The Animal Control dispatcher is expected to be able to meet or exceed the following expectations:
- Greet visitors in a welcoming and professional manner.
- Maintain a clean and orderly office area, including daily sweeping and mopping
- Assist with the transfer of animals between the public, field officers, and shelter staff.
- Be comfortable around animals of all sizes and temperaments, including dogs, cats, and small animals
While heavy lifting is not a routine part of this role, the Animal Control Dispatcher will be required to help guide, hold a leash, and support an animal during transfer into or out of Animal Control. The individual we are seeking is attentive, proactive, and comfortable transitioning between taskis in a fast-paced, animal-centered environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Answer and triage calls for service in a professional and efficient manner.
- Log service calls using shelter management software and dispatch appropriate staff.
- Assist with the intake process of animals arriving at the shelter.
- Process dog license sales and maintain accurate records.
- Learn and apply local and state animal-related laws and ordinances.
- Deliver e3xcellent customer service to the public and fellow agencies.
- Support day-to-day administrative operations as needed.
- Collaborate with shelter and field staff to ensure seamless coordination.
- Accurately complete reports and dispatch logs.
Required Qualifications
- Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- Valid driver's license and ability to pass a background check.
- Have prior experience in customer service, dispatch or a public-facing role.
- Must be able to read, write, and speak English and possess strong oral and written communication skills.
- Be able to maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
- Ability to multitask, stay organized, and work in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficient with computers and basic software.
- Comfortable working indoors and potentially unsanitary or unpredictable environments.
- Sound judgment and decision making skills in potentially stressful situations.
- Possess a strong attention to detail.
- Comfortable handling money and basic math functions.
- Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.
- Maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, law enforcement, and the public.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in dispatch, law enforcement, or emergency services.
- Familiarity with animal shelter or animal control operations.
