Volunteer Application (Adult)

About Yourself

Support Roles

Support roles do not involve contact with animals. This includes a wide range of tasks, which might be performed at the shelter or elsewhere. Support tasks might be regular and scheduled, or occassionally helping out with a niche skill.

This does not include posting on or managing HSBC social media accounts
Our Board of Directors keeps us going! Select this option if you'd like to be contacted when there is an opening on the board

Cat Care

Cats that need to be housed in cages require special care to stay physically and mentally well. Select if you want us to contact you about caged cat care

Dog Care

In-Kennel Training (IKT) is a critical program to improve the welfare and adoptability of our shelter dogs.
Dog walking volunteers play with dogs off-leash in the yards, walk dogs on-leash in the play yards, and walk dogs on-leash off of HSBC property
Dog's Day Out trips are halfway between dog walking and fostering. Take a shelter dog out on the town for a few hours during shelter hours
HSBC is considering developing a dog walk shift in the evenings. Please select this option if you are interested.

If you have taken classes/lessons with a professional trainer or school, please include your trainer's name or business name

Availability & Capacity

As a member of the HSBC Volunteer Team, you're not alone. No one can do it all, but together we can transform the lives of animals in Barron County.

We want to make sure your volunteer experience stays sustainable and joyful. Please take a moment to let us know what feels like a good fit for you right now—we’re always happy to adjust as things change.

We've already asked for your availability for volunteer tasks that need to be coordinated with staff or scheduled. If you haven't already mentioned your availability, please share it here
We never want to ask you for more time than you can comfortably give. How many hours per week (or per month) do you want to volunteer?

Next Steps for Dog Care Volunteers

We want to make sure you feel confident, safe, and fully supported while you volunteer with our dogs. To do that, we have a step-by-step training process to prepare you for direct dog handling and walking.

  1. Two Online Forms: When you hit submit, you'll get an email with links to your Volunteer Agreement Packet and Risk Acknowledgment. Sign these forms to continue onboarding as a HSBC volunteer.
  2. Fear Free Shelters Course: We'll send you a welcome email with registration information for a free online course that's required for all staff and volunteers who have contact with our animals.
  3. In-Kennel Training: Shelter dogs behave differently than family pet dogs, and things can get very overwhelming, very fast. So we developed a program where you can make a huge difference for shelter dogs' without the overwhelm and risk. It's based on how zookeepers train dangerous animals in zoos! In-Kennel Training helps you gain experience with shelter dogs, so you'll be ready to walk them and play outdoors with them soon!
  4. Dog Walking: After you complete a minimum of 25 hours of In-Kennel Training with a minimum of 25 dogs, you'll graduate to Dog Walking (Green level). You'll be able to interact directly with "Green" dogs, play with them outdoors and take them for walks.
