Adoption Rules

Please give careful consideration to adopting a companion animal. Animals are not toys or short-term commitments. Make sure that you have the time, patience, and resources that this animal will need over the next 10 years or more. Animals are placed in adoptive homes with full consideration given to their specific needs.

  1. Animals are placed in occupied private residences only.
  2. No animal may be kept continually in a cage, yard, pen, hutch, or garage or on a tether or be allowed to roam off the owner’s property.
  3. If not sterilized or microchipped, prior to adoption, the animal must be spayed or neutered and microchipped with written proof furnished thereof no later than the date specified at the time of adoption.
  4. Persons living in apartments or renting a house must have written permission from the rental agent or the property owner.
  5. The adopter must provide the animal with necessary veterinary care in case of sickness, disease, or injury. In addition, animals must be taken to the vet once a year for a routine checkup and maintained on preventive flea/tick/heart-worm medication.
  6. The animal must be maintained humanely and in accordance with all laws and ordinances in force in the jurisdiction in which the owner resides. The animals must wear proper identification at all times, be microchipped and, if lost or stolen, must be reported immediately to Marion County Animal Control and other local animal shelters and advertised as lost on local social media sites, or major newspaper.
  7. The animal must be properly exercised through daily leashed walks or adopter must have a secure, fully-fenced yard.
  8. The animal must not be loaned, rented, or sold as a guard dog, used for vivisection or any other experimental purpose whatsoever, or used for food or in commerce of any kind.
  9. The animal must not be given away, sold, or exchanged without the prior permission of authorized agents. If, for any reason, an adopted animal can’t be kept by the adopter, he/she must be returned to: Marion County Animal Control.
  10. Marion County Animal Control reserves the right to investigate, unannounced, the living conditions of any animal adopted from it/him/her and may reclaim any such animal being kept in violation of the rules and requirements of the Adoption Agreement.
  11. The adopter assumes full financial responsibility for the animal.
